What do I need to know about these? I have heard things about the front differential on some MB models around this era...anything else?

Electrics can be dodgy and the SBC brake pump can be costly.
The SBC is only meant for a set number of work cycles and after that will force the car into limp mode until it's replaced. In general, the facelifted model is much better and more trustworthy.

Huh...I see 1.3 MILLION Mercs with this system were recalled between 2004-2005. Fixed in 2006. Nice to know.

Most of them had the SBC fixed by the recall, but not all, and the recall has probably expired on this one if it hasn't been done.
I've never seen a diff fail on one of these.
Valve covers well leak at some point. Rear main will seep a little as it gets older, though usually nothing to worry about. Air suspension is air suspension. May need front ball joints and bushings at some point in its life.
Overall, these are excellent. Seriously one of the most reliable engines Mercedes ever built. The only things specific to this car that would turn me off are if the SBC wasn't fixed under the recall, and if the transmission has never been serviced (should be every 40k). If you can do light DIY, you can handle most everything this car can throw at you, so long as you're willing to learn.

Thanks for the lowdown. I'd been looking at the R series and they had some front diff issues. Glad it's not this model.

R-class had more than front diff issues, and unless one of those had excellent service history and some key items taken care of.
I'm not saying this E-class will be perfect, but I would own one in a heartbeat.

It is still for sale. I am going to check it out this weekend. Will report back with some more questions.
